THE Australian Baseball League season reached its midway point on the weekend and the middle of the ladder remains as congested as it did a week ago.

With Melbourne streaking out in front and Perth faltering at the bottom it looks like four teams will spend the second half of the season battling for two playoff spots.

Round five preview: Bandits at Bite

THE two teams that met in the final game of last season clash for the first time since seemingly going in opposite directions.

Brisbane (7-9) – which defeated Adelaide in last season’s ABL Championship Series – have fallen into a rut and won three of its past 10.

The Bite (8-8) on the other hand are building momentum and have been winners in four of their past five and last weekend collected just a second ever series won in Perth.

What we learned from week four

MELBOURNE extended its lead at the top of the ABL standings with a resounding win in its top-of-the-table series against Canberra.

Elsewhere, Adelaide recorded its second series win in Perth to climb to third and Sydney stayed in second after earning a home split against Brisbane.

Who has the best starting rotation in the ABL?

THE best starting rotations in the ABL are bound to get better after Melbourne and Sydney both announced the signing of Major League arms this week.

Chris Oxspring will take to the mound for the Sydney Blue Sox this weekend for the first time since January 2013 and Jeremy Guthrie will link up with the Aces in the second half of the season.

What we learned from week three

MELBOURNE finally ended its road series hoodoo and did it in style with a sweep over Claxton Shield holders Brisbane.

Canberra continued to show off its powerful offence in a series win over Adelaide and Sydney topped Perth to leave the Heat stranded to the bottom of the ABL standings.
